On Saturday, November 9, 2013, Cook County Recorder Karen A. Yarbrough and top members of her staff will join with the Greater Chatham Alliance community organization to offer a Free Property and Deed Fraud Awareness Seminar.
The event will take place at Crerar Presbyterian Church, 8100 S. Calumet, in Chicago, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Interested residents will learn how savvy fraudsters are abusing Illinois’ open land records system to steal properties from others.
CCRD staff will also be available to register home and property owners for our FREE Property Fraud Alert system, which will send registrants an email or give them a phone call anytime a document is recorded against their property. Getting a notification as soon as a document is recorded means that a homeowner can take legal action before the fraudster can use their false interest to cause further damage, like taking out a mortgage against the property.
Residents will also learn about the implementation of a new law that allows the Cook County Recorder’s Office to help victims of recording and deed fraud quickly invalidate fraudulent recordings at no cost to them. By using Cook County’s Administrative Law Division to review cases of clear fraud, victims will no longer need to hire an attorney and wait in the back of the line in chancery court.
The CCRD/GCA event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (312) 603-5065.
